There are many reasons to try the holistic services of our acupuncturists in Walnut Creek. But one of the biggest benefits of Chinese medicine is its ability to treat threatened miscarriage. Below, our team at Monarch Acupuncture & Wellness explores a recent randomized trial that explores this particular benefit of acupuncture.

  • Background

One of the common complications of early pregnancy is the increased risk of miscarriage. With little evidence supporting self-care management, the study examined the feasibility of acupuncture as an alternative treatment for women threatened with miscarriage.

  • Methods

The recent study used a randomized controlled trial in combination with semi-structured interviews. The study compared a pragmatic acupuncture protocol, which included medical self-care advice, and compared it to an active protocol of medical self-care advice in combination with touch intervention.

  • Results

In the group that received acupuncture, there was a statistically significant decrease in threatened miscarriage symptoms such as cramping, bleeding, and back pain. Through thematic analysis, the study also revealed that women were not happy with the advice and medical support they received.

  • Conclusion

The study reveals that acupuncture is a feasible intervention that can decrease threatened miscarriage symptoms in patients when compared with touch intervention. Although more evidence is needed to determine if it can reduce miscarriage incidence, data thus far is promising.
