Can Acupuncture Help You Get Pregnant?

A study found that around 10 percent of women in the U.S. (ages 15-44) experience difficulties getting pregnant. Many women with pregnancy-related complications use pregnancy acupuncture near them.

The Relationship Between Stress and Infertility

Stress can decrease a woman’s chances of getting pregnant. Studies show that high stress levels may cause fallopian tube spasm, interfering with the movement and implantation of fertilized eggs. It can disturb the harmony between the pituitary, reproductive, and hypothalamus glands.

How Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old Chinese practice. It involves inserting paper-thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. Acupuncture can increase fertility by easing stress and anxiety, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs, and balancing hormones.

Acupuncture fertility treatments can reverse the adverse impacts of stress. Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release feel-good hormones known as endorphins, thereby helping achieve harmony between the mind, body, and soul.

Many studies conducted to establish a link between pregnancy and acupuncture have found that women who receive acupuncture have a higher pregnancy rate than those who don’t. Many fertility doctors around the country recommend that their patients use acupuncture to lower their stress levels.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

TCM practitioners believe that illnesses are caused due to disturbance of the energy flow in the body. Acupuncturists insert paper-thin needles in the skin at strategic points of the body to stimulate meridians or energy channels. This restores the natural energy flow. Acupuncture calms the nervous system and adjusts the function of the body so that it can repair itself.

Acupuncture Promotes Ovulation

Anovulation (lack of or infrequent ovulation) is one of the most common causes of a woman’s inability to conceive. Anovulation can be a result of polycystic ovarian syndrome, a hormonal disorder that causes congested ovaries or hypothalamic amenorrhea, a condition that occurs due to lack of communication between the brain and ovaries.

Acupuncture can help with both PCOS and hypothalamic amenorrhea. In a study that involved women with PCOS, one group received acupuncture for 10-13 weeks, while the other group only received counseling. At the end of the study, women in the first group reported an increase in the frequency of their ovulation.

Acupuncture and IVF Treatment

A 2005 study reported that subjects who received IVF injections and acupuncture had a pregnancy rate of 33.6 percent. In contrast, those who did not receive acupuncture had a pregnancy rate of just 15.6 percent. It was concluded that acupuncture improves blood flow to the uterus. A well-nourished egg has a higher chance of being carried full term.
