Female infertility is a growing concern. In fact, approximately 11% of American women of reproductive age experience fertility problems.

Infertility can be devastating to the mental and emotional health of women and their partners and studies show that women with fertility problems experience significant anxiety and emotional distress. However, the good news is that many struggling women who practice holistic wellness including fertility acupuncture may eventually conceive.

Causes

There are numerous reasons why a woman may find difficulty conceiving. The creation of life is a complex and beautiful thing and there are many reasons why women may experience infertility issues.

However, as the leading fertility acupuncturist in Sacramento, Monarch Acupuncture understands that there are some common causes that can contribute to infertility.

➢    Ovulation Disorders: These are a leading cause of infertility among women. They affect the release of eggs from the ovaries. Some common ovulation disorders include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hyperprolactinemia – a condition characterized by excessive prolactin.

➢    Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can also interfere with the ovulation cycle. Some other causes of ovulation challenges include eating disorders, tumors, and overexercising.

➢    Cancer and Cancer Treatment: Some cancers can cause fertility problems and cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy may also affect female fertility.

➢    Fallopian Tube Damage or Blockage: This usually occurs when the tube becomes inflamed. Fallopian tube damage or blockage may result from pelvic inflammatory disease, adhesions, sexually transmitted infections, or endometriosis.

➢    Primary Ovarian Insufficiency: Primary ovarian insufficiency, or early menopause, occurs when the ovaries stop generally functioning before age 40. Researchers don’t know the exact cause of early menopause. Some studies associate radiation therapy or chemotherapy, certain genetic conditions such as carriers of Fragile X syndrome and Turner syndrome, and immune system diseases with early menopause.

➢    Endometriosis: This occurs when cells similar to the lining of the endometrium grow outside the uterus affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus.

➢    Uterine or Cervical Abnormalities: These include abnormalities of the cervix and polyps. In many cases, benign tumors in the uterine wall block the fallopian tubes or stop a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus, causing infertility.

➢    Pelvic Adhesions: These are bands of scar tissue caused by endometriosis, pelvic infection, and appendicitis. Pelvic adhesions can also form after pelvic or abdominal surgery.

Some Risk Factors for Reduced Female Fertility

Some groups of individuals have a predisposition to developing fertility issues based on their lifestyle and other factors. Some common risk factors are

➢    Age: Women in their mid-30s are at high risk of health problems affecting fertility. Also, as women age, the number and quality of eggs decline.

➢    Regular Alcohol Use: Studies show that women who drink seven or more drinks a week or more than three drinks on one occasion regularly are more likely to experience fertility challenges.

➢    Tobacco Use: Smoking can disrupt normal ovarian function, making it difficult to conceive. Some studies have found that smoking can also reduce the effectiveness of fertility treatments. Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke during pregnancy can cause miscarriage.

Some Common Signs of Female Infertility

A fertility specialist can help you understand what symptoms and signs may be related to fertility issues. Some common signs attributed to struggles in conception include:

➢    Painful periods – cramping, back pain, or pelvic pain during menstruation.

➢    Irregular periods or abnormal period cycles.

If infertility is caused by a hormonal disorder, you may also experience these symptoms

➢    Sudden and inexplicable weight gain

➢    Hair texture change or hair loss

➢    Changes in sex drive and desire

➢    Skin texture changes and acne

➢    Dark hair growing on the chest and lips

Acupuncture For Female Infertility

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that originated in China in the 13th century AD. In this practice, a professional inserts paper-thin needles through the skin at specific points on the body to heal energy blockages. This practice is safe and 100% drug-free when performed by an expert.

Many people find the idea of having needles inserted through their skin concerning. Acupuncturists use very thin needles instead of hypodermic needles; most clients don’t even feel the insertion and many fall asleep during their treatments.

Fertility acupuncture in Sacramento can be used as a standalone therapy or combined with fertility treatments such as IVF, IUI, FET, and donor IVF. Studies show that acupuncture can increase the chances of conceiving in women undergoing IVF by improving ovarian function and balancing hormones.

How Does Acupuncture for Female Infertility Work?

➢   Acupuncture Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Stress is a leading cause of female infertility. Acupuncture helps reduce stress by stimulating the body to increase the production of endorphins and other feel-good hormones. It also reduces stress hormone levels.

➢    Helps with Embryo Implantation: Evidence suggests that acupuncture increases embryo implantation rates. A study found that acupuncture significantly increased clinical pregnancy rates in women who have had one or more failed IVF cycles.

➢    Regulates Female Reproductive Hormones: A recent study found that acupuncture alters the way reproductive hormones are secreted in women. As a result, they respond better to ovarian stimulation medication.

➢    Improves Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs: Acupuncture improves blood flow to reproductive organs such as the ovaries and uterus. It helps increase uterine lining thickness, creating an environment conducive to implantation.
